Life Is Beautiful

In "Life is Beautiful," Guido chooses to use his sense of humor to get in and out of certain situations. He uses his sense of humor to coincidentally meet Dora several times, such as when impersonating the school inspector and speaking of belly buttons to make her laugh.
During the time of war, Guido relies on jokes to make the seriousness of the concentration camp turn into a game in which he and Joshua are competing. By doing so, he creates an element of fun to it all. Guido manages see people who are being killed and struggle with forced labor day after day and still be a good father to his child by diminishing his fears. If he had not had such a sense of humor, Joshua would have been terrified of all he saw, and traumatized for the rest of his life.
Even right before death, when Guido most likely knew that it was over, he still tried to entertain his son and show him that somehow, everything would end up okay.
When we endure hard times, we try to lessen the pain by seeing the good side of it or using our humor to get through it. Sometimes, the humor is directed towards us and other times, it's toward society and the way things are.
When we make jokes about a situation or ourselves, it makes us realize that there are more important things, and that life will usually go on, despite our problems. This is one way that we can always lessen our burdens and break tension in predicaments.
Guido is a prime example of an altruistic person. He did not complain about their circumstances and wasn't bitter towards anyone. Instead, he did what was best for Joshua by pretending that the whole thing was a game. By doing so, his unselfishness shone through and proved that a good sense of humor can help you through anything.
