Losing Isaiah
Losing Isaiah
What kind of mother would put her baby in the trash so that she can go off and get high on crack? From the beginning of the movie my mind was made up that Khaila was a lousy mother. I understand that drugs ruin people's lives and when someone is on drugs they aren't thinking rationally, but that's still no excuse for what Khaila did to Isaiah. What Khaila did was criminal; she should have been put in prison for leaving Isaiah in the trash. I do believe in second chances, but in this case, I feel that Khaila doesn't deserve a second chance with Isaiah. Khaila is a drug addict and there is always a chance that she could backslide and start doing crack again. The best thing Khaila could have done for Isaiah is to stay out of his life. In my opinion, Isaiah shouldn't have to deal with Khaila's problems and lifestyle when he has so many problems of his own that are due to Khaila's drug use when she was pregnant with him.
I can understand Khaila's side of the situation. She cleans up her act (she has been drug free for two years) because she wants to get a shorter prison term, after being arrested for stealing from a liquor store. Khaila realizes that she wants to be a mother to her son when she gets the news that Isaiah is still alive. Khaila wants Isaiah to know were he came from and know his black heritage. I can sympathize with her in that she feels that her baby was in a way taken away from her, even though she abandoned him and never tried to find out what happened to him. Khaila feels deceived that no one tried to contact her that Isaiah was alive or about his adoption when she was in jail. I suppose if I was in her situation, I would want my baby back also, but it would always eat at my conscience that I left my baby in the trash and did drugs when I was pregnant. How would I tell my child when he is older that I didn't care enough about him when I was pregnant not to take drugs? How could I explain why I left him...
