Last Chance Ballet

This is another adaptation of the age old
love story with the culture/family clash,
think Romeo and Juliet, West Side Story
with slight modifications that serve it
well no economic conflicts in this one;
they are both poor. Sarah (Julia Stiles)
and Derrik (Sean Patrick Thomas) are
two recent performers to the silver
screen and they were wonderful.

There is not a person I can think of
for the lead role than Julia Stiles. She
blends in her other character elements
of slow rural America, with the faster
pace of the South Side. A candid
appraisal could not gloss over the
stereotypes, but in this case, they serve
the movie well to situate it within the
particular genre. Her counter part,
Sean Patrick Thomas, a relatively fresh
for to the silver screen, shows cinematic
potential. He is not the typical ghetto
thug, but he plays numerous parts. The
"ghetto boi", the ambitious scholar, and
the affectionately devoted boyfriend.
His character was depicted with great
purpose and he certainly made an
impression on countless teenage girls.
The personalities in this motion picture
were certainly effervescent in their
portrayals of inner-city high school
students, though most were over the age
of twenty-three.

Though the plot has been re-done to
the point of excessive, this movie has it's
own sense of reality. Hollywood very
rarely approaches ‘reality' seriously,
usually glossing over the fact. This
movie, however, is set in inner-city
Chicago and the characters are faced
with numerous current problems facing
society today, like inter-racial
relationships and teenage mothers.
