Another reason for ocean pollution is the Oil. Oil spilled accidentally or dumped from tankers pollutes beaches and covers bird, fish, and plant life. In 1989, in one of the world's worst single instances of water pollution, the Exxon Valdez spilled 10 million gallons of oil in Prince William Sound, Alaska, causing great environmental destruction (Lecture 16: Ocean Pollution). In 1997, the 22 oil spills reported worldwide involved a total of 15 million gallons (57 million liters) of oil. In addition to its direct damage to wildlife, oil takes up fat-soluble poisons like DDT, allowing them to be concentrated in organisms that ingest the oil-contaminated water; thus such poisons enter the food chains leading to sea mammals and people (Day 180).
Sometimes, it's the wars between nations that cause the pollution in the oceans. A perfect example would be the Persian Gulf War. As Ms.Talen states in her book,
During the Persian Gulf War, Iraqi president Saddam Hussein ordered troops to damage a Kuwaiti oil pipeline and five supertankers. The resulting oil spread more than 250 square miles—the worst oil spill in history (70).
There is little one can do when the government official, themselves, are willing to destroy the environment for their selfish goals.
Even though not all of these wastes were purposely dumped into the oceans, they have all traveled to it. There have been many ways to dispose of wastes, but none thus far have been successful. In the beginning, the wastes were purposely dumped into the ocean or were transferred thru another body of water that flows into it. That was one of the only ways for over a thousand years. Recently, there have been laws passed to minimize the dumping, but many companies still dump illegal amounts. Another way is when things are accidentally lost in the water. This includes things from ship wrecks, planes that went down and garbage from barges on their way to off-shore land fills, and...
