Enemy At The Gate
To start, Enemy at the Gate is a wonderful story of a terrible battle. The author, William Craig, researches this battle for many years to bring it alive to the reader. It is 500 pages and 20 chapters of love, revenge, friendship, and violence. It is about the best Soviet Union sniper playing a game of cat and mouse with a German Nazi general sniper. All in all, there are many situations in this book that make it come alive.
It all starts out when the Nazi are trying to take over the world and it is all up to a city in Russia called Stalingrad, to save the world. The Russian sniper, Vassili Zaitser, is being dropped off in the front line of the battlefield. While trying to look for a hiding place, he grabs a rifle off a dead soldier and hits the ground. This is where he meets Danilov, his future best friend who is a professional propaganda writer. Vassili, with one shot to the head of fireguards, kills them and him and his friends escape. With the professional writing of Danilov and the perfect shot of Vassili, Vassili becomes a hero in Stalingrad. The Germans hear of Vassili and they send out Major Konig, the best German sniper, to kill Vassili. While Konig is searching for Vassili, Vassili is hiding in the house of friends where he meets a lovely and beautiful soldier. He eventually falls in love with her.
The first of the three face offs between the two enemy snipers is at a department store where Vassili is accompanied by his partner and bombs are going off everywhere. His partner gets shot and dies. Konig escapes and both snipers return to their army bases. At the same time, Danilov is also falling in love with the same beautiful woman soldier. The second face off is in a tractor factory and the beautiful soldier follows Vassili. She also helps him by shining a mirror towards Konig and blinds him so Vassili can get his gun back after he had dropped it. Vassili takes a shot and shoots Konig in the hand and injures him.
