Essay Title Do You Agree With David Putnam Producer Of Chariots Of Fire That The Central
This essay will attempt to provide a detailed analysis of the film Chariots of Fire. To achieve this I will provide a brief overview of the film and then proceed to work my way on to the main focus for this essay, which is the role that the main protagonists Abrahams and Liddell have within the structure of the film. I will attempt to support the view of the producer that the film's main aim was to portray the "instinctively honourable values" of the two main characters.
The two main characters in this film come from different backgrounds; this contrast in backgrounds is what creates the characters different values and aims within the film. Abrahams is an English Jew, who studies at one of England's finest universities Cambridge. Liddell is a former Scottish Rugby player whose main purpose in life is to be a missionary, to follow in the footsteps of his father. Abrahams has a desire to win/succeed, which stems from a brooding resentment against the establishment.
"I believe in the pursuit of excellence."
He believes that he is discriminated against because he is Jewish, he views an Olympic gold medal as way to vindicate himself before the world. He faces personal struggles on and off the track to achieve this goal, including the battle with the establishment for his use of a professional coach Sam Mussabini.
Liddell runs for different reasons, he has the
"power to see the race to the end"
because he sees running as a way to honour God; he likens running to preaching.
Both of these men are proud to be British
