Willy Russell’s play ‘Educating Rita’ is based on how his own life used to be. Like Rita, Willy disliked school, was a hairdresser and had a string of various other jobs. ... Willy then went onto writing his own plays, including this one written in the 1970’s, which he wanted to base on himself, which ended up winning Oscars and being a total success.
In Act 1 Frank is very dominant, he is the one with the power and control. ... Although from the early stages of the play, Rita has her own views and is also prepared to argue and disagree with Frank. In Act 1 we also learn a lot about Frank and Rita’s characters, using quite clever methods like the telephone conversation by Frank, we learn how Frank relies on his hidden bottle and that he has a drink problem, because in his own eyes he is a failed poet and uninspired teacher. There is no way the audience could disagree with this because of the images you get when he attempts to teach Rita when he gives a lecture in a drunken state we also learn that Rita is very sensitive.
To start off with when Rita goes for her first tutorial with Frank, Frank finds Rita overpowering and thinks that it is impossible to help Rita therefore feels she would be better off with another tutor. ... I think this is because Rita’s language is colloquial and ungrammatical, plus she uses a lot of slang, “Stupid bleedin’ handle”, but as the time passes we find out that really she is very intelligent but has never had the opportunity to actually put her brain into practise.
Frank is quite shocked by Rita’s character because there isn’t many students even Open University ones who actually talk to Frank in such an informal way. He soon begins to understand that Rita is only doing this because she lacks confidence, she even admits this herself “I take the piss because I’m not, y’know, confident like…” I think in a way, Frank feels sorry for Rita and can see how determined she is to make something of herself and I think now Frank has got involved he feels obliged to take her on and help and he can see how Rita begins to rely on him for help.
