Discussion Of The Effect Of Repetition In The Film Lola Rennt
The effect that repetition has on the audience of the film, Lola Rennt is one of an alternate universe and also of confusion. The film is a narration within a narration, or rather three stories within one film. The three stories inside the film and can be described as a comedy, a tragedy and the last one as a surreal story. Each of these stories adds to the audiences confusion as they don't know which story is true. Each story starts at the same point but all of them have different outcomes. The director commented that one of the scene's at the beginning of the film, was the only scene that was the exact same through out the three different stories. This is the scene where the camera follows Lola down the hallway to the stairs and then pans into the living room where her mother is on the telephone. All other scene's were shot three different time but this one was only shot once, and used three time.
It was hard to decide whether the first story or the second story was the tragedy or the comedy. There are aspects in both parts which make them both funny but they both also have tragic moments. It was obvious that the third story was the surreal one, because if it happened to anyone, they would not be able to believe their absolute luck. In each story there are markers in the story in order to point out to the audience that the stories run on the same time frame. These markers come in the forms of the minor character in the film.
In the first story there are many moments that are both funny, but they are out weighted by the tragic moments. Some of the tragic moments can be viewed as a ironic so they end up being funny. For example at the end of the first story when Manni and Lola have been surrounded by police. As Manni throws the bag full of money into the air, one of the policemen, who looks nervous, young and inexperienced, shoots Lola by mistake.
