Discuss the ways in which any social group is represented in any one text you have studied this year.

In this essay I will discuss how youth is represented in the film ‘Rebel Without a Cause’ (directed by Nicholas Ray), and will examine how the film focuses on the angst surrounding Jim Stark, Plato and Judy, as they make the transition from adolescence to adulthood. I will show how ‘Rebel Without a Cause’ empathises with the feelings and emotions of the three main characters (all estranged from their families for different reasons) and in my conclusion I will show why I feel the film still has relevance in the 21st century.

Firstly I will question the film title and discuss what constitutes a ‘rebel ’ and was there really any ‘cause’ for the behaviour of the youths in the film. ... The need for an identity serves as the cause of their alienation from their families and is the prevalent theme that unites the three main characters

In the scene in the police station the audience sees the three characters together for the first time. ... ” and again later when his father is wearing a frilly apron and is attempting to clear up a tray of dropped food without his wife knowing. ... Dean was “…attractive in his alienation, self-assured in his confusion…” (Doherty, 1988) and became a figure of worship for thousands of frustrated and confused American teenagers, he epitomised their feelings and ensured that James Dean would forever be labelled as a ‘rebel’. ... As Doherty says (in his chapter - Dangerous Youth) “…what was new about… ‘Rebel without a cause’ was …the cool-but-caring, strong-but-sensitive combination…put to youth’s service” (Doherty, 1988).
