American Beauty
American Beauty
American Beauty has quite a lot of symbolism in it. It has place and time through out the movie. It represents many things through out the movie and conceals many hidden underlying meanings that contribute to the over all plot and impact the movie gives to the viewer. The main symbolic this that I caught in the movie was the differences to the two neighboring families.
The military family has many things that to the untrained eye would seem to be just the regular go through of every day life. But when you take the time to look and examine the family you see that in many ways it resembles the typical ideal American family that we all try to achieve and mold our selves into. But also resembles the American problem in the family that has been there through out the dawn of time.
On the surface you see the model family. With the perfect model father with the military background and like every thing in its place and wants everything to just so and perfect just as it was going to be ready for military inspection. He likes to keep every thing in order and likes to keep every thing symmetrical. Just as with the chairs in front of the TV. He has his wife in such a rhythm that she has to keep the house clean and spotless and anything that is out of place is just a mess and she must apologize.
How ever upon close inspection this model family is just a facade going on under the father's nose. The kid is a rebel that is obsessed with the meaning of things and sees life as just a journey till the end in which death is inevitable. He can just see so much in such little things in nature. However unannounced to the father he is also involved with drugs and the buying and selling of them. He lives the literal lie in front of his father taking small odd jobs to cover up for his money. So as you can see there is the underlying problem with this family.
