Attitudes And Values Of Enemy At The Gates

Annaud commonly explores themes and issues in Enemy at the Gates, which in turn contain values and beliefs. These values and beliefs about war and love are that there are no winners in war, war is inhumane, the Germans are the aggressors while the Russians are the victims and that love is able to endure through all kinds of obstacles, regardless of its magnitude. These can be interpreted differently by different people from different backgrounds, personal experiences or simply cultural differences. However, it is very clear and apparent that Annaud tries to guide audiences to respond in these particular ways through the use of techniques he chooses to include such as colour, use of camera and music, which all assisted in guiding the audience's response. These responses are the result of the visual and audio techniques used by the director to try and persuade the viewers to respond in a particular way about the themes and issues brought forward.

The viewers' response about the war theme that there are no winners in war and war is inhumane can be resulted from Annaud's use of colour, camera, and choice of detail.

Throughout the entire film, the colours used to paint the film are all dull and monotonous like dull blue, grey and black. This in itself paints a very grim and dark picture about the nature of War and how everyone is affected regardless of whether they are the winners or losers, aggressors or victims. Viewers are thus encouraged to have the values about war as mentioned because the whole film is extremely dull with no bright and happy colours like yellow, orange or bright green.
