Weber State University An Analytical Movie Critique on Shrek and Annie
While preparing for this assignment, I watched two films. The first film I watched is titled, Shrek, and it was released in 2001. This movie is about a big, green, ugly ogre who sets out to save Princess Fiona in order to regain the title of his swamp, because the evil Lord Farquod sends all the fairytale creatures to live there. Princess Fiona is locked up in the tallest tower of her castle which is guarded by a fire-breathing dragon. She is also under a spell in which she turns into an ogre at sunset, and back into a beautiful princess at sunrise. Only true love's first kiss will break the spell, and she will then be transformed into love's true form. This concept of a princess being cast under a spell is similar to the stories of Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, and Cinderella.
This film portrays people of royalty to be self-centered, evil, and manipulative. They are only concerned with getting ahead in the world. Lord Farquod wants to become King, and that's the only reason he wants to marry Princess Fiona. Princess Fiona wants her spell to be broken so she can always be beautiful, and that's the only reason she wants to marry Lord Farquod. Since Princess Fiona is primarily focused on being beautiful, it may possibly send a message to the girls who watch this that their main focus should be about beauty as well. Also, Lord Farquod is so concerned with becoming King, it could send a message to boys about wanting to have power. According to Freud (1940-1964), children who watch this film may internalize the messages and therefore form a new "mental agency" in which they would become part of their id or pleasure seeker. This would cause the children to seek out extreme ways of becoming beautiful or powerful.
Shrek is portrayed as a hideous monster who doesn't want any friends...
