Ashoka
"Ashoka" is a movie depicting the life of the legendary Indian prince Ashoka. The movie
follows Ashoka's quest of power from him growing up as a young kid to his march west through
India. The move "Ashoka" takes place in the 3rd century B.C. and it shows the history, some
factual some fictionalized, of India during this century.
The movie starts out with the death of Ashoka's grandfather. At his death Ashoka takes
his grandfathers sword despite his grandfather's sever warning that the sword was a demon
taking the blood of friend and foe. The next part of the movie is when Ashoka is fighting with
his brother over the thrown. Although no physical fights with his brother take place, Ashoka's
brother does send out mercenaries to take Ashoka's life. Fearing the death of her beloved son
Ashoka's mom makes him flea and take up a life as an ordinary man. While he is an "ordinary
man" Ashoka, now Pawan, meets and falls in love with a hiding princess from the rival Indian
kingdom. The two fall in love and get married. Ashoka goes back to his homeland for a brief
stay, then returns to find his wife "murdered." When he returns to his kingdom his mother is
assassinated and Ashoka now losing the two loves of his life goes off the edge and on a killing
spree. Killing all his brothers Ashoka ascends the thrown and begins his march west to attack the
kingdom that killed his bride. His bride, who turn out not to be dead leads the army against
Ashoka. In the end the two find each other and love conquers the boundaries, but the path of
destruction was enormous.
In my opinion this movie was basically Romeo and Juliet, set in India, and with a happier,
not happy but happier ending. The movie although long and filled with subtitles was over all
entertaining. It was filled with action, humor, and yes the occasional music...
