Arranged Marriage

In the movie A Lion in Winter there was an arranged marriage between Alias and one of King Henry's sons. Which son would marry her had not been decided and it never was settled. Arranged marriages were a common tradition in the Middle Ages. Today, however, it is not a common practice. But, there are many pros and cons to an arranged marriage.
There are several positive attributes of an arranged marriage. First, the male or female does not have to date. This is because they already know whom they will marry and there is no reason for dating. Second, there are no worries. One does not have to stress over looking good for a special someone. Plus, it is all set up for them before the couples are even born.
There are; however, negative aspects of an arranged marriage. First, the person has no choice over whom they will marry. If he or she does not like the other person it will be too bad. The marriage will still take place and sooner or later it will fall apart. Next, there will probably not be any love in the relationship. Without love the marriage will not last as King Henry and Queen Eleanor's did. Love is the basis in all relationships and in the absence of it there is no marital relationship at all.
The reason Western Civilization has not adopted arranged marriages is because in they do not believe that one should choose the mate for another. The Bible, which is the basis for marital rules, does not tell people to have this type of marriage. Plus, western countries have earned numerous amounts of freedom and one of those freedoms is to choice their own mate.
Overall arranged marriage is not a positive practice. In the past it has fail as shown in the movie The Lion in Winter. The arranged marriage for Alias never even took place, plus the planning of it caused tremendous chaos in the kingdom.
