A Worn Path
"A Worn Path" written beautifully by Eudore Welty is an extended metaphor in many ways. Eudora Welty is using a woman's journey to town as a metaphor for life. In the first way Welty is exlpaining that love can get us through all obstacles. Phoenix would have done anything to get to town and make sure she would get that medicin for her sick very sick grandson. In other ways ways Eudora Welty is showing that life, in general, just like Phoenix's trip to town, are not easy to get through and it takes work, struggles, and tears. As Phoenix is walking, she gets to the hill, "seems like there is chains about my feet, time I get this far." Life's an uphill battle, and once a person would get to the top, he or she knows they must come back dowb, Just like Phoenix, once she got up the big hill, "up through pines, down through oaks." Phoenix also gets very tangled in some thorns, "old eyes thought you was a pretty little green bush." Through life, everyone can be deceived and end up getting "tangled" up in situations they thought were harmless; just like Phoenix thought the bushes were harmless, but ended up having the most trouble with them. At the end, whether the boy was dead or alive was irrelevant to the story because Phoenix knew all she needed to get through her journey was the fact that she loved her grandson so muc and that is all she needed to get through. All we need to get through life is love.
