A Blessing
Blessings can be considered as simple gifts from friends to some wonderful experience that God has given. James Wright, a modern American poet, tells about such a gift that he received on the side of a highway to Rochester, Minnesota, in "A Blessing."
This poem has significant elements that help the reader see its deeper meaning. One element seen throughout the poem is personification. "Darken with Kindness" is personification because kindness is a human attribute that is being used to describe horses. "They can hardly contain their happiness" is another example of personification because happiness is a characteristic that only humans feel. The poet used personification to show a deeper meaning to the poem by making the poem more real to the reader.
Another element that is used is metaphors. A more meaningful metaphor is on line two where the poem says "Twilight bounds softly forth on the grass." The author uses "bounds" because that is how the horses seem to move across the grass, so in a way it foreshadows what is to come.
The rhetorical shifts also add meaning to the poem by emphasizing certain changes in the poet's voice. One shift occurs between lines fourteen and fifteen when the author stops describing the horses and starts describing how he is feeling about the situation. Another shift occurs between lines twenty-one and twenty two when the author realizes the depth of his feelings of the experience.
This poem shows the blessings that God gives when least expected. The method of this poem really helps to reinforce the meaning of it because it is all the little details that make something great.
