“A Child Called It” is a fascinating memoir about a devoted den mother to the cub scouts, but not to her son David who she referred to as an “It.” This story is a horrifying account of the bizarre tortures she inflicted on him. David was starved, stabbed, smashed face first into mirrors, and forced fed ammonia and the contents of his baby brother’s diapers, by his alcoholic mom. There were many times that his mother claimed that he had violated some rule, but mostly it was pure brutality. Strangely, his father didn’t help or protect him. His only salvation came from a teacher and from his own inner strength.
