A Farewell To Arms

The book A Farewell to Arms by Earnest Hemingway takes place during World War I on an Italian front. Hemingway writes about Lieutenant Henry, an American ambulance driver, and Miss Catherine Barkley, an English nurse aid that falls madly in love with each other during some hard times. Their desire to be together brings confusions and pain to each other along with friends around them. This following essay will be describing Lieutenant Fredrick Henry's thoughts, priorities, and opinions on the war.
"I went everywhere. Milan, Florence, Rome, Naples, Villa San Giovanni, Messina, Taromina-----." Just returning from a long trip, Lieutenant Henry tells his room mate and best friend, Lieutenant Rinaldi. Just unpacking and settling back in; Lieutenant Henry's opinions on the war were rotten. Wanting the war to end so everyone can move on, he started off with a negative attitude about the war.
Lieutenant Rinaldi wanted to introduce Lieutenant Henry to a beautiful woman he is talking to. Lieutenant Henry's first impression on the woman, Miss Catherine Barkley, was shocking. "Miss Barkley was quite tall. She wore what seemed to be a nurse's uniform, was blonde, and had a tawny skin and gray eyes. I thought she was very beautiful." This quote which can be found on page 18, chapter 4, starts to show Lieutenant Henry's sudden interest in Miss Catherine Barkley. Thoughts, opinions, and priorities may begin to change up for him.
Beginning to get to know each other, Lieutenant Henry and Miss Catherine Barkley start to conversate alone more often. "Let's drop the war." "Its very hard. There's no place to drop it." "Let's drop it anyway." "All right." This quote which is expressed on page 26, chapter 5, shows how Lieutenant Henry's opinions on the war still haven't changed. His priorities begin to target directly on Miss Catherine Barkley. For the both of them new experiences and opportunities begin to open up. "Were going to have a strange life." This...
