A Lesson Learned

Softball not only taught me a talent but most importantly; it taught me how to be a team player. I started my journey playing tee-ball when I was just seven years old. Being as young as I was, it was very frustrating at first to understand what was going on. But the older I got the more I began to understand it. In tee-ball it was easy because there was not a pitcher. The ball was set up on tee and you were supposed to hit it with the bat.
Whenever the ball was hit the person closest to the ball was supposed to retrieve it and throw it to the first base. While the team was working together to get the ball to first base, the batter was trying to successfully make it to first base before the ball was thrown. Many afternoons were spent practicing throwing and catching the ball until each of the players learned the talent. I received numerous bruises throughout my softball years from the mistake of not being able to catch the ball.
As time moved on and I got older the game seemed like it changed a bit. I guess by the end of my first softball season, I had learned how important being a team player was. The next year I went from hitting the ball off of the tee to hitting the ball that was thrown by a pitcher. It was very frustrating to learn how to coordinate the timing so that the ball would impact the bat and have it soaring onto the field. Some of my proudest moments came when I was able to send the ball almost to the fence allowing me time to run through all three bases and then home plate without being tagged out.
The team play came when we were on the field and the opposing team was up to bat. A good team player was one that was able to know what to expect from the other players and that came with practicing the plays over and over again.
Throughout the seven years that I played softball it taught me many things. The most important one of them all was how important it is...
