A & P Response Paper

The details in the setting that are important to the plot of "A &P" is that the grocery store where the incident takes place is not near the beach. "Â…our town is five miles from the beach, with a big summer colony out on the point, but we're right in the middle of town, and the women generally put on a shirt or shorts or something before they get out of the car into the street" (Paragraph 10). This is a very important detail because the girls are not near the beach or any type of water and have no reason to be barefooted and wearing bikinis inside a store and yet they are.
Sammy is not the sexist pig one may think while reading this story. Although he makes comments about the girls such as "do you really think it's a mind in there or just a little buzz like a bee in a glass jar?" (Paragraph 2) when referring to their minds, he is a typical nineteen year old male who is going through his growing pains and is making little mental comments in his head about what he is seeing. He is not saying these things directly to the girls, nor is he making lewd comments or gestures at them. Saying something offensive to the girls, or acting inapprioatly would then make him a sexist pig, but in the story the reader is just given his opinion of the girls.
I think that Sammy's decision will affect his future but not in the ways that Lengel describes. I think that Sammy quitting over what he thinks is right and not right gives him a sense of independence that he did not have before and that he will want to keep doing with what he thinks is best for him and not rely on what others think is best for him.
