A Lesson Before Dying

Kuntzman, Alicia 2-5-03 Pacesetter English Sebastian 5th In the novel, A Lesson Before Dying by, Earnest J. Gaines the definition of manhood that is ultimately provided is to die with absolute dignity. This is provided by getting Jefferson to walk to the electric chair with a proud and courageous bearing that will defy the entire white community. Grant explains to Jefferson that a man does not run away from his problems or current situations, a man stays and fights sticking up for himself and his “ people” or family proving he can do the unexpected. The white people are saying that there is no way for Jefferson to be a man because he is a hog. Grant tells Jefferson that this is only a myth “an old lie that people believe in” (191) because white people think they are better than anyone and everyone else. He tells Jefferson that he wants Jefferson to finally change all that and “chip away at that myth by standing… to call them liars… show them that you are more a man than they could ever be” (192).
