A Misunderstood Youth: Paul's Case

A character is presumably an imagined person who inhabits a story. In “Paul’s Case”, Willa Cather wrote about a young boy named Paul who loved to defy everyone and live his life as he chose. Paul was a misunderstood youth and that caused him to defy everyone and live his life as he wanted, not caring of the ramifications this would have. Paul can be defined as a round character because of his great depth and because the author portrays him in a more generous detail. These characters often change, they learn, grow and become more enlightened, which is exactly how Paul is written. It does not take long for Cather to describe Paul to the readers. She portrays him as being very tall and thin for his age and having remarkable eyes. Cather also describes how his clothes were worn and frayed and how he loved to wear a red carnation in his buttonhole all the time.
