Richard DeLange Mrs. Dollard Honors English III 8 November 2 002 A Gentle Creature turned to Evil There are several key distinctions between the epic Beowulf and the novel, Grendel, written by John Gardner. The difference in narration is a significant difference between these two literary works. The Psychological perspective of Grendel is portrayed differently in the two pieces of literature. The topic of what a hero truly consists of its present in both books; however, the interpretation is different. The main difference in narration between the Beowulf epic and the novel Grendel is that Grendel is a first hand account told by the monster itself. Beowulf is an epic poem that was told by the Anglo-Saxons. It was told from their prospective of being attacked by this savage beast called Grendel. This difference in narration presents two extremely different viewpoints of one story. The Beowulf epic presents the story of a nation struggling to stay alive. Danes are being slaughtered by this savage beast, but a hero of tremendous strength comes to saves them.
