Different Types of Steel Roller Coasters of the Last 20 Years I. You feel your body get slammed into the seat behind you as you accelerate to one hundred twenty miles per hour in the longest four seconds of your life. As you climb to four hundred twenty feet, your body is pulled back down to the earth just before you spin through the dizzying two hundred seventy-degree twist. Eventually you realize what just happened. When you compare this roller coaster with the ones twenty years ago, you can see the path of technological advancement that has helped us reach faster speeds, taller heights, and longer distances. The steel roller coasters of the last twenty years have evolved into many machines that each has their own place in the roller coaster industry. II. There are so many types of roller coasters that exist throughout the world today. A. The most common position that riders are in while riding roller coasters is the “sitting” position. 1. These coasters are what led the way to the different styles of seating in today’s modern coasters. 2. They can be grouped into two different ways they gain their speed. a) The majority of sitting coasters use a traditional chain lift. (1) Some of these traditional coasters go upside down, or include inversions. (a) There are many different manufacturers of traditional sit-down looping roller coasters. (b) A good example of this type of coaster is Shockwave at Six Flags Great America. (c) A good example of this type of coaster is Kumba at Busch Gardens Tampa. (d) A good example of this type of coaster is Colossus at Thorpe Park. (2) There are also coasters that use a traditional lift, but do not go upside down. (a) There are many different manufacturers of traditional sit-down non-looping roller coasters. (b) A good example of this type of coaster is Magnum XL-200 at Cedar Point. (c) A good example of this type of coaster is Raging Bull at Six Flags Great America. (d) A good example of this type of coaster is Millennium Force at Cedar Point. b) “Sitting” coasters that launch you, instead of a chain lift, are also in existence. (1) Some of these launched coasters include inversions. (a) There are a few manufactures of sit-down launched looping roller coasters. (i) The majority of these manufactures use propulsion from electromagnets. (b) A good example of this type of coaster is Poltergeist at Six Flags Fiesta Texas. (2) Other coasters that are launched do not go upside down.
