Alcohol

Alcohol is a drink readily consumed by all sectors of society. It is not uncommon for a man or woman to drink alcohol on a daily basis. I believe that the legal age for alcohol consumption should be lowered from 21-years-old to 18-years-old.
Since the early days of history, people have ingested alcohol. It was considered "a gift from god" (Alcoholism: The Facts), and therefore widely accepted. "Alcohol was considered a medicinal healer for the sick, tonic for the healthy, an up lifter for the saddened, and required fare for celebrants." Only alcohol abuse was considered bad. In 1632, Virginia outlawed drunkenness. To accommodate all the people that wanted to drink legally, more taverns and inns were constructed. In the 1820's, a movement began in the U.S. that promoted temperance (minimal or moderate use of alcohol). By 1832 all the states in the U.S. had supporters of temperance. It was also the time of a great increase in alcohol consumption. Then in 1919, the U.S. congress adopted the 18th Amendment, which prohibited the manufacture, importation, exportation, transportation, and the sale of alcoholic beverages. It went into effect in 1920, only having two serious handicaps. First, it was nearly impossible to enforce the laws. Second, the law did not prohibit the purchase or use of alcohol. Since this was the carefree time of the "Roaring Twenties," the demand for alcohol was very high. People bought alcohol from bootleggers, which proved to mark the 1920s as the beginning of organized crime, such as the Mafia. For all these reasons, the U.S. Congress passed the 21st Amendment in 1933 repealing prohibition.
Alcohol belongs to a family of chemicals that contain carbon and hydrogen atoms. It affects the body in two ways. First, it comes into direct contact with the linings of the mouth, esophagus, stomach, and intestine, where it acts as an irritant and an anesthetic.
