In the epic poem the Illiad by Homer, two Greek heroes, Achilles and Hector share common predetermined fates. These heroes know that they will achieve great successes, but that their glory will also be met with a premature death. In Achilles case, although he is a half immortal individual because his mother is the sea goddess Thetis, and is predestined to die at an early age because of his selfishness and excessive pride. In Hektor‘s case, he is man that is loyal to the state to a fault and a model citizen for his people. However, it is his lack of understanding and unawareness in his treatment of Patroklos eventually leads to his unfortunate end. By their tragic death, “moira,” or destiny, is uncontrollable by both mortals and immortals in the divine and human realm. Nevertheless, these men are heroes, Hektor as a hero of the whole society and Achilles as a hero for his individuality. Hektor who is the greatest Trojan warrior along with being the commander of the Trojan army is the son of King Priam and Queen Hekuba, making him the prince of Troy. Hektor is the role model for his entire culture and a hero of the state.
