Admissions Essay
My high school football coach always told me that football and life go hand in hand in many ways. I never would have believed him when I was in the 3rd grade. Back then, my parents had to threaten me with punishment if I did not go to practice. I was always ready for games though because there was the promise of snacks and a juice box regardless of the result of the contest. The more I played, the more I began to like football and all that it has to offer. The game has been like a mentor or big brother for me ever since.
When I was younger, fear was a large part of my life. Even in full armor, I went to every practice timid and scared for my life. If it were not for the push that my parents gave me, I would have never learned the numerous forms of courage that the game has taught me: courage under fire, courage to try new things, courage to take chances knowing that the situation may not work out for me. I am sure that there are still forms of courage that I have yet to learn; that is one reason I continue to play the game.
Many of the children that play organized sports at a very young age do so, because someone that they look up to also plays sports. I had no such motivation. I was obligated by my parents to play the first year. After that, it was my choice to persevere and work hard to get better at whatever my coach needed me to do. That work ethic transfers over to everything that I do today. From video games to my schoolwork, football has taught me that hard work pays off in the end.
Whether it is the fourth quarter, or the last section of the SAT, I approach every situation with basically the same method. I plan for the future, while still taking it one day at a time. Much the same way that I play one play at a time, while sticking to the gameplan. I would never have believed my coach in the 3rd grade, but now I know in my heart that football has taught me countless lessons about life itself.
