Acceptance Speech

Indistinguishable

March 6, 1986. This was the glorious day that I was born, the day I was given a name and welcomed into the world with open hands and overwhelming smiles. As I watched the illuminated faces shine at me I noticed I could not hold their full attention. The day of my birth had brought about an unexpected surprise. I was not the only one in this hospital room; there was a contender I had not been told about. Then I heard the bell ring. "In the blue corner weighing in at 5 pounds 7 ounces we have Adam Grant McCauley, and in the red corner weighing in at 5 pounds 4 ounces, we have Grant Adam McCauley!" As I sit in my assigned seat I look at the announcer who is clothed in white and holding none other than his medical paraphernalia I wonder if there was a mistake. The lights flash, and the crowd goes wild as my challenger enters the rink. Who is this challenger, who is stealing my adoring fans? The opponent enters the rink, and as he rips off his red silk robe I notice a similarity. I look at him awkwardly and incline my head slightly sideways like a puppy does to owner. The crowd is subdued, and I lay down my gloves. The man in the red robe is my twin brother; a reproduction of what was my unique smile, my unmistakable body posture, and my irreplaceable eyes. I cannot fight him, he is…me.
Waking up to the realization that I have a mirror image of me walking around in the same house is almost enough to put me back to sleep. I really couldn't explain the feeling I get when I hear the name Grant being yelled down a hall, and know deep down that they are talking directly to me. I just like to play along with it until they can figure out by themselves who I am. For a length of time I am Grant, and who is to say I'm not? I will wait patiently until I can capture that brilliant moment where I can see the bewilderment and embarrassment in their face, as it is returned by a smile materializing from mine.
