There are various elements in the film Casablanca, that could cause it to be considered a war film, but the elements that really count are not there. War films often acknowledge the horror and heartbreak of war. Casablanca focuses on one man’s life and love, and the people surrounding him. Rick is only interested in himself at the beginning of the film but slowly he comes to realize he must do for the good of his country. This sacrifice includes giving up his love, Ilsa, and letting her return to the States with her husband. Ilsa’s husband is a very important man and needs to get out of Casablanca. Rick helps them escape. Usually in most war films, the two males compete over the lady, one doesn’t help the other keep the lady.
