After the Americans gained their independence from England it was vital to establish order in America. Coming out of the Revolutionary War the goal of this government was to avoid tyrannical rule. As a result of this, the government gave the sovereignty to the states and limited the government’s power. Although this plan of state sovereignty seemed like an effective way to rule the country it was very ineffective. Proof of the government’s incompetence is apparent through their foreign relations; they were unable to make peace with Spain and were forced into signing a treaty that would be devastating to America, and they were not able to remove British troops from the country. Another example of the failure of the Articles of Confederation to run the country well were the economic conditions of the United States.
