Etruscans were great artists, and women had high status compared to their Greek or Roman counterparts. Etruscan women kept their names, and Etruscan children bore the names of both parents. In addition, Etruscan elite women were permitted to attend athletic contests in spite of the presence of nude male athletes. Since most societies resist outside influence, it makes sense to downplay the Etruscan impact on Rome. Yet too little evidence survives from Archaic Rome to make a firm conclusion either way. Adding to this inability is the fact that we cannot deceiver their language. 2. The evolution of the Rome during the Republic can be broken down into three stages. The first stage is the Early Republic. During this stage, there were centuries of social and political conflict. Next came the Middle Republic, a shorter time period of relative stability and consensus. Finally, social and political conflict broke out again in the Late Republic. You can argue that the only time in which the Roman empire was truly successful was in the Middle Republic.
