Exhibitionism and Rebellion in Holden Caulfield

Exhibitionism and Rebellion
in Holden Caulfield

Certain significant behaviors can affect the production of healthy relationships. Exhibitionism is a behavior that can prevent people from establishing healthy relationships. Rebellion is another behavior that discourages the production of healthy relationships for people as well. These behaviors, which are very common among adolescents, can be seen in Holden Caulfield, a witty and sarcastic young man, in the novel, The Catcher in the Rye written by Jerome David Salinger. Because of Holden’s display of exhibitionism and rebellion, he experiences a difficult time developing and maintaining healthy relationships with people.
Holden Caulfield, a lonely and confused adolescent on the verge of adulthood, tries to attract attention to himself in any way possible way. Being the lonely person he is, Holden believes he must make himself the center of attention in order for others to talk to him. ... Holden’s exhibitionism prevents him from establishing healthy relationships with people such as: Bernice, Valencia and the hatcheck girl. Holden’s abrasive language as a reflection of his exhibitionism bothers Bernice, a lady he has just met and is dancing with, when he says: I’m twelve for Chrissake.
