Omega Point Theory
This paper will explain and analyze the Omega Point Theory as it is explained by Frank Tipler in his book The Physics of Immortality, which will be the basis of this paper. Tipler defines the Omega Point Theory as “… a testable physical theory for an omnipresent, omniscient, omnipotent God who will one day in the far future resurrect every single one of us to live forever…”1 The theory draws largely from the works of Freeman Dyson, the field of physical theology, theoretical physics, modern cosmology, and a fair amount of computer science and Theory. ... The Omega Point Theory is not intended to be a philosophical or theological argument, but rather a legitimate scientific theory stemming from only already well established physical Principles. Not only does Tipler attempt to show that the Omega Point exists, but that the Omega Point is analogous to God, and that the Omega Point will be omniscient, omnipotent, omnipresent, but will also be good and loving and will resurrect us to eternal life. ... The Omega Point is a future state of the universe where life continues to exist and develop forever without becoming locked in an “eternal return” or facing a “heat death”. ... The second part of his theory says tat the amount of information in the universe approaches infinity as the universe collapses. He asserts that “The amount of information stored at any given time diverges to infinity as the Omega Point is approached, since the entropy diverges to infinity there. ... If this Omega Point is established, Tipler argues(I feel, rather weakly) that it will be a single entity that is omniscient, omnipresent, and omnipotent. He argues that since the amount of information stored and processed in the Omega Point is infinite, the Omega Point contains all knowledge. Because all of the space in the universe will be localized at the Omega Point, it is omnipresent, and because life will collectively gain control over all matter and energy it is Omnipotent. Since the Omega Point is in essence a quantum cosmology, Tipler rejects the Copenhagen Interpretation of quantum mechanics, instead subscribing to the Many-Worlds Interpretation. ... Using the Many-Worlds interpretation of quantum mechanics does not contradict the idea of one sole Omega Point(Tipler believes that there will be only one) because the Omega Point will not only be able to process all the information that did exist but all information that could exist.
