Night: A Message on suffering The book Night begins in 1941 with Elie and his family living in Sighet, an area in Germany. In 1944 German and Hungarian police set up ghettos where all the Jews and people with other religious backgrounds were kept, and this is where Elie and his family were kept. ... When Elie and his family arrived at the concentration camp in Birkenau, he was separated from his mother and sister, whom he later found out had been killed. ... While Elie was in line awaiting the entrance to the camp he plotted suicide by throwing himself into the barbed wire fence instead of allowing them to throw him into the fire pit. ... Elie worked in a factory, where he met a lot of people, including a girl from France. ... They were later liberated at Buchenwald, and Elie was one of the very few to survive. Response to suffering: Elie’s sufferings are that of unmatched horror and genocide in which he witnessed his own family fall to the tortures of a power-hungry army. Elie managed to live through each of the tortures and hardships but what was not able to survive was his faith in God, “Master of the Universe.
