Dostoevsky Diction in Crime and Punismnet
Raskolnikov shunned God out of his life during his childhood. Sonia embraced the Lord and guided Rodya to help realize the importance of God in his life. She also helped him become part of human society again by persuading to confess his sins and forgiving the earth for what he had accomplished. Throughout the novel Sonia acts as Rodya’s guardian angel and helps place him on the right path to salvation. Along with Sonia, Rodya’s family helps him accomplish the same goal. At the beginning of the novel Raskolnikov had no faith in god. Dostoevsky stated "He was flinging himself on his knees to pray, but broke into laughter - not at the idea of prayer, but at himself." This means that Raskolnikov can believe him for even trying to pray. Before the murder Rodya says to himself "When reason fails the devil helps!" I think this statement proves that Raskolnikov isn’t sure about carrying out his plan, but he thinks the devil clears his mind of his conscious and allows him to carry out the murder’s.
