Angela Hassell 10/01/02 Literary Analysis of “Sis’ Becky’s Pickaninny” The short story, “Sis’ Becky’s Pickaninny” , by Charles W. ... The frametale story structure contains two stories; Annie’s illness and Sis’ Becky’s losing her pickaninny and becoming ill. The stories form a parallel pattern in that magic and luck are the key ingredients in helping Sis’ Becky restore her health and for Annie to recover. The conjure woman uses a hummingbird, mockingbird, a hornet and other creatures to get Sis’ Becky back to the plantation to be with her child, and the parallel to this is Julius’ tale and the rabbit’s foot superstition as a cure for Annie’s illness. ... Sis’ Becky is a strong slave woman unlike the weak Annie but she becomes very ill and falls under the magic of the conjure woman which brings her to recovery. The conjure woman, Aunt Peggy, parallels Julius in that she is the one that is manipulative with her magic and helps Sis’ Becky get better and back to her pickaninny.
