twelfth night
In what ways does Shakespeare create comedy in Act 3 Scene 1of Twelfth Night In Act three Scene one Shakespeare uses a number of different ways to create comedy. There is slapstick comedy between Sir Toby and Sir Andrew mostly aimed at the audience in the pit. There is also the cross-dressing of viola as Cesario, which in places is very funny. This leads to mind boggling confusion, as viola would be played by a male actor dressed as a woman disguised as a man. Olivia cannot tell the difference between viola and Sebastian. She is attracted to both. Orsino is drawn in friendship to a young man “Cesario” later revealed as a woman, whom he then happily marries. By contrasting these characters and their reactions to “Cesario”, Sebastian and Viola, Shakespeare explores the nature of attraction between people and shows that you can be attracted to either sex. In the scene Shakespeare is very clever.
