Some believe that the Holocaust existed while others do not believe of such expression. The word Holocaust is derived from a Greek translation of a phrase in Genesis and means, “total burning.” (Weber PG 12) The Holocaust refers to the murder of six million Jews and the destruction of more than 5,000 European Jewish communities at the hands of the Nazis and their allies from 1933 and 1945 (Kremer PG 17). It was the most profound expression of the anti-Semitism that had flourished in Germany and other European nations for many centuries. (Kremer PG 18) The Holocaust exists alone in history. Americans believe that the holocaust did exist. Most Americans know more about this European event than they know that the United States dropped an atomic bomb on Japan, for reasons that have as much to do with the Cold War as World War II.
