Should we ban sodas in school

Should we ban sodas in schools? ... As a result, the governor of the state of California has recently signed a law to ban the sale of carbonated beverages, as we called ÒsodasÓ or Òsoft drinkÓ, in all middle schools, which will be affected by the year 2004, as an attempt to control weight gain among kids. While some people believe that a ban on sodas in schools would help controlling obesity problem among children, some people express their concern that eliminating school contracts with soft drink companies may introduce financial problem to most school districts. I, as a member of PTA in Bay City Unified School District (BCUSD), do realize that obesity among kids is a big issue, however, banning soda sale does not seem to be the right solution we should apply to our school since we are still relying only on the profits from selling sodas to support studentsÕ activities and related materials. Besides, sodas can also help students to stay awake and fresh during the day or after schoolsÕ activities. Thus, I purpose that we should continue selling soda in our school district. Moreover, to facilitate with the obesity issue, I urge that BCUSD should contribute some profits from selling sodas to offer more healthy food in the school cafeteria and create more activities that encourage students to adopt healthy eating habits into their daily life.

Unfortunately, we all realized that the only source of fund to support studentsÕ activities currently comes from the profits of the soda sale in school. Since the Physical Education program budgets were cut, Bay City Unified School DistrictÕs only school-based exercise is sports teams, and profits from soda sale is the only source of fund that we could obtain to support the project.
