Newpapers

Hundreds of words, printed onto thin sheets of paper which are folded, stacked, delivered to thousands of people who wake up every morning to flip through the pages and read about death, life, war, peace, sports and comics: Newspapers have been and perhaps always will be the medium by which countries and continents seep in everyday events. The printed word was created to provide a way for entire populations to read about what was going on in their towns, states, countries and the world. Whether the articles are about a kidnapping, a bankruptcy or a Little League game, newspapers are printed to educate and inform. A paper’s effectiveness lies in its structure and design. The so-called “hot topics” are printed on the first page, often accompanied with poignant or disturbing color photos. A paper’s front page is perhaps the most important. Reporters struggle to have their stories be “front-page material.” Why? That is page most subscribers and passers-by read. It is the face of a paper, the sheet that entire populations will study. Its design is constructed to hook a reader’s attention. Articles are distinguished by their headlines. Readers can immediately find which articles they’d like to read by simply scanning the headlines that accompany each piece of writing.
