“The Engine at Heartspring’s Center” In the story, “the Engine at Heartspring’s Center” by Roger Zelazny, man named Bork survives a horrific assassination attempt in space; though he escapes, he is badly injured. To salvage his life, pieces of abstract materials are fastened, however he is no longer considered human. Depressed about his situation, he joins the Heartspring’s Center, a euthanasia colony on an island, to end his life, but only people that are at peace with ending their lives can join.
