Personal Narriative Essay

Kaylee got off of the bus crying, and ran into the house to the comfort of her mommy. They had done it again, the kids on the bus made fun of her new glasses for the third day in a row. Her mommy hugged her and reassured her that they did not look bad and the other kids were jealous. She sat down on the couch and Kaylee sat down beside her and said, “Honey, there is something I want you to always remember. ‘Sticks and stones can break your bones, but words can never hurt you.’” This is a phrase that I heard often growing up. When I was younger, it was an easy one to follow by. I can still remember being in kindergarten running around the playground singing it like a song when someone would say something to me that was intended to hurt my feelings. For some reason, back then things never got to me. I have gotten older; I have grown to realize that the common phrase we teach to children is not true. Sticks and stones can break your bones and words can hurt you. Words can cause more pain that a broken bone. Words can cause insecurities, psychological problems, and emotional problems. Up until second grade, I took everything real light-heartedly. I did not let many things get to me, and often times if someone had something bad to say about me, they would say it to me because they knew that I could take it without blowing up in their face, tattling, or doing anything else that an elementary student may do. By third grade, all that had changed. I had gained some weight over the summer. At first, it did not bother me, and it probably would not have, but I had to go school clothes shopping. My mom seemed to be amazed at the fact that I had gained so much weigh over the summer.
