“Blacks and Whites must come to terms with the past and make a future together or face destruction” said James Baldwin, (American 2/2) a member of “The lost generation.” Not only was Baldwin a civil rights activist, but he was also an openly gay African American, who was a gay-rights activist as well. Baldwin, whose books would tell about his childhood, and the struggles he faced as young gay African American trying to find himself.
Baldwin was born in Harlem, in 1924, (Random 1/2) to a single mother who later married a priest. The couple had a total of seven children, not including James. Baldwin had a troubled relationship with his stepfather who dominated much of his childhood, and in turn, Baldwin turned to reading as a means to escape.
