In Chicago, Illinois on the 5th day of December, 1901 Walter Elias Disney was born. His father, Elias Disney, was a building contractor at the time and his mother, Flora Disney, the designer and bookkeeper of the family business. ... At the age of four years old Walt’s father moved the family to a farm in Marceline, Missouri. It is believed that this is where Walt acquired his love of animals and nature. In Walt Disney, An American Original, Bob Thomas writes a of one of Walt’s recollections of the farm, “Walt’s memories of that farm stayed with him throughout his lifetime. ... Walt’s two oldest brothers, Ray and Herbert, left the farm after a disagreement over money earned with their father, which left fewer hands to work the farm. ... Elias bought a newspaper distributing company where Walt and his older brother, Roy, worked delivering newspapers. At age nineteen Roy left home which left more responsibility to fall on Walt. Walt’s studies suffered from the many hours spent working for his father. Thomas stated, “Walt’s teachers complained that his attention wandered . ... But Walt seemed unwilling to conform to the ordinary methods of learning . ... Walt developed the art of caricature sketching. ... Once again, Walt’s father decided to move, so the family moved back to Chicago, Illinois in 1917. Walt started high school there. ... Also during this time, World War I was occurring and Walt’s older brother Roy had enlisted. Although Walt was too young to enlist, he did feel a duty to his country.
