Setting -The story starts of in Seattle, Washington at the corner of Second and Main Street. -Part of the beginning chapter also takes place in Ichiro’s new home. The home is described as a “hole in the wall” and it is a grocery store which used to be owned by the Ozaki’s. Conflict -There is a conflict between Japanese who got drafted and those who refused. This conflict is evident in Ichiro and Eto’s rendezvous. Even though these two have history together, the fact that Ichiro is a no-no boy seems to break through friendship. -When Ichiro encounters his mother, we see that there is a conflict within him. He doesn’t know whether to regard himself as American or Japanese. He implies that he is half American and half Japanese because he is of Japanese blood, yet he grew up in a very American lifestyle.
