amalgam model The most useful approach to the study of Canadian Politics
Several approaches towards the study of Canadian politics have been put forth, most of which have been quite controversial and debated. The four main approaches according to Rand Dyck (2000) are the pluralist, public choice, class analysis and state-centered, all of which are very useful, however, not in their purest form. Instead, Dyck offers a more useful approach, which incorporates aspects from all four of these approaches titled the amalgam model. Dyck explains: “The predominant influence of business pressure groups can be taken from pluralism and put together with the government’s attempt to present itself to the electorate in the most favorable light from public choice theory, the pervasive influence of capitalist values from class analysis, and the persistent influence of the bureaucracy from the state-centered approach.” This is a very clever approach, which indeed, is the most adequate towards explaining Canadian politics. In his proposal, Dyck supports his amalgam model by saying “the bureaucracy advises on almost all prime ministerial, Cabinet, and ministerial decisions and then makes many others on its own. ... ’” Information technology is a study, which is extremely modern and holds only few experts in the field. ... ” The next major aspect of the amalgam model is the dominance of the capitalist ethic brought forth by the Class Analysis approach. This approach originates from Karl Marx, and believes that “the state in a capitalist society is an instrument through which the small minorities who control most of a society’s wealth maintain their social and economic dominance.
