Objective: To secure equal education for all races; blacks and whites alike. Summary: I am a teacher who began a school for girls in the town of Canterbury, Connecticut in November of 1831. When Sarah Harris, a young black woman, came to my school and asked to be admitted, I simply could not refuse her, despite the objections of the townspeople. When the citizens of Canterbury began to take their girls out of my school because I was teaching Miss Harris, I was forced to close the school and open a new one which admitted black girls and women from within the state and from without.
