Akosombo Hydropower Project in Ghana
After doing some research and reading up on newspaper articles I found a lot on the Akosombo Dam, and how Ghana is in a state of trouble because of the lack of water to power these hydropower dams. ... From reading Africa South of the Sahara, by Robert Stock I gathered some more information on the Hydropower in Ghana. Kaiser Aluminum built the Akosombo Dam across the Volta River in 1965. This dam was said to be “the cornerstone of Ghana’s drive for modernization. ... The Akosombo Dam at that time had four power generating units, which could generate 588 megawatts (MW) of power. ... The mighty Akosombo, as it is known, was a source of glee for Ghanaians. ... In all, Ghana had a power generating capacity of 1,072 (MW). At its peak, the Akosombo Dam had created the largest man made lake in the world boasting a size of 3,000 plus square miles.
