"School of the Americas"
The School of the Americas originated at Fort Amador in 1946 as the Latin American Training Center - Ground Division. Four years later it was renamed the U.S. Army Caribbean School and transferred across the isthmus to Fort Gulick, where Spanish became the official academic language. In July 1963, the school was redesignated the U.S. Army School of the Americas, to more accurately reflect its hemispheric orientation. Under the provisions of the 1977 Panama Canal Treaty, USARSA was relocated to Fort Benning, Georgia, in October 1984 and designated an official U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command School. The school, along with the U.S. Air Force's Inter-American Air Forces Academy, attracts the largest number of Latin American military students. The School's mission is to provide doctrinally sound, relevant military education and training to the nations of Latin America, while promoting democratic values and respect for human rights, and fostering cooperation among the multinational military forces. The problem with the School of the Americas is that this school trains Latin American people to kill, torture, rape and murder innocent people. It trains them to spy upon civilians, including student groups, unions, charitable organizations, and political parties. The U.S. Army clearly opposes the statement that they train these people to do these wrongful actions. Since its inception, many of its 60,000 graduates have led or participated in countless atrocities committed against the people of their countries. They include 10 officers who became presidents of their respective countries: Manuel Noriega of Panama, Hugo Banzer of Bolivia, Leopoldo Galtieri of Argentina, Humberto Regalado of Honduras.
