Agamemnom

Agamemnon begins at the house of Atreus in Argos, during the tenth autumn of the Trojan War. We are first introduced to the Greek Watchman, who is anticipating a fiery signal that will signal the defeat of Troy. Speaking pessimistically about the current state of his empire, the signal fire is lit and the watchman quickly exits to alert the Queen Clytaemnestra. The Chorus, a group of the aged men of Argos, appears and convey to the audience necessary information regarding the Battle of Troy. The Chorus notes that the Trojan Prince Paris began an affair with Helen, the wife of the Greek monarch Menelaus. Eventually abducting Helen, Paris’ actions led to the Trojan War. The audience is also informed that Agamemnon, brother of Menelaus, sacrificed his daughter Iphigeneia; the motivation for this sacrifice was to please the god Artemis in order to curry a favorable wind for the Greek ships and gain consequent military victory over the Trojans.
